## Description

A container management platform built for organizations that deploy containers in production. The Docker version of Rancher cannot be made HA (High Availability), however the clusters it creates can be. It is also possible to connect to and use clusters created by Rancher when it is down. Useful as a management interface for deploying, scaling, and editing apps on other systems. (In the cloud, a Raspberry Pi cluster, VMs running k3os, etc.) Perfect for running and managing the apps that you'd rather not go down while maintaining your server.

## Platform availability

Available on 2 of 9 platforms: Unraid, Helm.

## Common questions

### Which ports and flags are used in the Rancher quick start?

Use the Docker quick-start flags --restart=unless-stopped and --privileged, and publish ports 80 and 443. Then open the browser to the local Rancher address.

### Is RancherOS a maintained choice for Rancher node operating systems?

No, the thread says RancherOS is no longer maintained. It suggests using Ubuntu or other common Linux distributions as Rancher node operating systems.

### How can I set up a highly available K3s cluster to host Rancher?

Use Terraform to create a K3s cluster with HA mode, using at least two VMs, for Rancher hosting and other services.

### What self-hosting migration path from Docker/Portainer is discussed?

The thread discusses moving from Docker/Portainer to Kubernetes/Rancher. It also notes that many self-hosters use k3s rather than Rancher.

### Why does the Rancher troubleshooting FAQ limit editing a container to its name?

Docker containers are immutable, so their settings are not changeable.
