## Description

Botmem is the web user interface for a self-hosted personal memory and retrieval-augmented generation system. It forwards application programming interface (API), OAuth, WebSocket, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) traffic to the configured Botmem upstream, keeping one browser URL while PostgreSQL, Redis, and the companion API run separately. It is for homelabbers who want simple access to their own memory services.

## Common questions

### Why do Botmem syncs complete but memories are not searchable?

Pull the required Ollama models before syncing. Without them, syncs complete but memories won't be searchable.

### Which personal data sources can Botmem ingest?

It supports Gmail, Slack, WhatsApp, iMessage, photos, and locations.

### What auth provider should a self-hosted install use?

Keep AUTH_PROVIDER=local. The configuration notes recommend that for self-hosted installs.

### How should a single-container Botmem setup handle API workers?

Keep BOTMEM_ENABLE_API_WORKERS=true. That makes the workers run inside the app container.
