DockRoute is an external DNS (Domain Name System) manager for plain Docker hosts that keeps DNS records and Cloudflare Tunnel routes aligned with container labels. It watches running containers, treats DockRoute labels as the source of truth, and reconciles them through a pluggable provider without altering records it cannot prove it manages. It is useful for homelabbers who want label-driven DNS and Tunnel routing for Docker containers. Use it to automate DNS and Cloudflare Tunnel setup while preserving safe ownership checks.

### How do I give DockRoute access to the Docker socket without manual user/group setup?

Mount /var/run/docker.sock read-only. The entrypoint detects the socket's group, grants it to the app user, and drops privileges before starting.

### How do I set the DNS record type and target for a container?

Use dockroute.type for A, AAAA, or CNAME and dockroute.target for the matching record value. If dockroute.target is omitted, DOCKROUTE_DEFAULT_TARGET is used.

### Will DockRoute touch DNS records it did not create, including records from another DockRoute instance?

No, it never alters records it cannot prove it manages. It treats everything it did not create as someone else's, including records made by another DockRoute instance.
