Every few minutes it sends a heartbeat so the alarm is the absence of a message, not the presence of one, which means a server that loses power, loses its line, or is switched off is noticed without any inbound firewall ports being opened. It also reports issues that are easy to miss: parity sync errors, a disabled disk being emulated from parity, climbing SMART attributes, filesystems remounted read-only, and memory errors the machine corrects without saying so.
