## Common questions

### Do date-pinned TimeMachine SMB tags receive updates?

No. Date-specific smb-YYYYMMDD tags are daily snapshots of the smb manifest, remain available for six months, and do not receive security fixes. You must update to newer tags when they are published.

### Is the AFP variant recommended?

No, migrate to the SMB image. AFP is deprecated by Apple, is less stable, and will not receive new feature updates.

### What happens to the persistent volume path if I change TM_USERNAME?

Changing TM_USERNAME changes the persistent volume path. You should check the persistent data path notes before changing that variable.

### How can Macs discover the TimeMachine share over the network?

Run the container with --net=host so Avahi discovery can be used. The README shows an SMB example with host networking for Avahi discovery.
