## Common questions

### How do I start LocalStack for local AWS calls?

Install the LocalStack CLI with pip or Homebrew, then run localstack start -d to launch the Docker runtime in the background. If the Docker app is not running, local AWS calls will not work.

### Why do AWS CLI commands against LocalStack fail with missing credentials?

Add a test profile to ~/.aws/credentials and ~/.aws/config with test keys, a secret, and a region. Without that profile, commands such as sts get-caller-identity fail.

### Did LocalStack 3.0 change which AWS services are available in the free edition?

Yes. Version 3.0 moved SQS, SNS, DynamoDB, and S3 from the free Community Edition to the paid Pro tier.

### Which Docker image does LocalStack use, and does it need an auth token?

The AWS emulator uses localstack/localstack-pro, while the Snowflake and Azure emulators use localstack/snowflake and localstack/localstack-azure. All require a valid auth token.
