## Description

GenericCache is a Docker-based caching proxy for game download traffic. It stores HTTP and HTTP range-request content locally, reducing repeated download bandwidth use for networks with multiple PC gamers, and supports clients such as Steam, Origin, Riot Games, Battle.net, Frontier Launchpad, Uplay, and Windows Update. It is intended for homelabs or offices with several Windows gaming machines and is normally paired with SteamcacheDNS and SNIProxy to route launcher traffic to the cache.

## Common questions

### What should be set up before adding a self-hosted cache service?

There is no strict install order because most self-hosted services are modular. Starting with core infrastructure like storage and networking makes it easier to point services needing bulk storage to centralized storage.

### Does GenericCache remove cached items when its capacity is reached?

The GenericCache .Memory source stores data in memory with a limited capacity. When the capacity is reached, the least recently used item is automatically removed to make space.

### How does GenericCache reuse objects in Roblox?

The Roblox GenericCache module creates and manages multiple caching objects. It uses instance-caching to reuse objects rather than creating new ones.

### Was a guide found for a local Steam cache?

The thread says the user wanted to create a local Steam cache but had not found a guide. They were trying to run Steam headless on a Linux server to download Windows files.
