## Common questions

### How can I self-diagnose a Pi-hole installation?

Use the diagnostic script to run tests against the software. It provides links to FAQ articles when a problem is detected.

### How can I point Pi-hole to a local DoT or DoH upstream on a non-standard port?

Configure the DoT/DoH package for an alternative port, such as 53053, after consulting its documentation. Then point Pi-hole's Upstream DNS Servers to the local DoT/DoH endpoint.

### What do the odd random character queries in Pi-hole query logs look like?

They appear as three queries containing only random strings, sometimes with the local domain suffix.

### What warning does an iPhone show when it detects encrypted DNS traffic being blocked?

It says the network is blocking encrypted DNS traffic. It also warns that names of websites and other servers your device accesses may be monitored and recorded by other devices on the network.
