## Description

Routinely scheduled archiving utility that scans one or more folders and compresses each sub-folder into its own password-protected, split, CRC32-verified RAR archive, then moves or deletes the source. Built for Unraid (Docker) users wanting hands-off scheduled backups with live status and a web UI; useful because it verifies each archive against the folder before anything is removed. Uses the RARLAB rar compressor in trial mode unless you supply a licence key.

## Common questions

### What Unraid template-file mistake can reset AutoCompress container paths?

Keep only my-AutoCompress.xml in templates-user. If another template copy also exists, Unraid may load it when you edit or update the container, and the paths can revert to the defaults.

### Where should AutoCompress settings, history, and logs be stored?

Mount the app data path at /data, such as /mnt/user/appdata/autocompress for Unraid. It holds settings, history, statistics, and logs.

### How can the AutoCompress web UI be protected with a login?

Set UI_USERNAME and UI_PASSWORD to enable the login page; UI_USERNAME defaults to admin. If UI_PASSWORD is blank, anyone who can reach the port can use the UI.

### What should self-hosters do before letting AutoCompress compress important folders?

Use a dry run first, because AutoCompress can delete original folders. Keep backups of data you cannot replace.

### What risk comes from using the optional All shares path?

Mounting /mnt/user lets the folder pickers browse any share instead of only the mapped folders. It gives the container read/write access to all your shares, so leave it empty unless you need it.
