## Description

Snapshot Visualizer is a TrueNAS web app that shows where ZFS snapshot space goes, the way WinDirStat shows files. A cushion treemap, a timeline and sortable tables show which datasets, snapshots and periodic snapshot tasks use your space, sorted by size, age and naming schema. It reads datasets and snapshots read-only through the TrueNAS API; deleting selected snapshots from the web UI is optional. HTTPS and an optional password protect the web UI.

## Common questions

### Can I install Snapshot Visualizer before it appears in the TrueNAS app catalog, and does it need an API key?

Yes, install it as a custom app via YAML. The example maps the TrueNAS middleware socket read-only and says no API key is needed.

### What port does the example setup use and why might the browser warn about the certificate?

The example publishes container port 8080 on host port 30527 over HTTPS. The warning occurs because the app uses a self-signed certificate, like the TrueNAS web interface.

### Can the web UI delete snapshots?

It is read-only by default. Deletion must be switched on in the web UI settings and always requires a double confirmation.

### How can I filter very large snapshot lists?

The search box combines AND terms such as size limits, write metrics, age ranges, exclusions, held, and regular expressions. The snapshots table also supports CSV export.

### What do the grey shared snapshot space blocks in the treemap mean?

They show space that belongs to several snapshots. That space is freed only when all snapshots sharing it are deleted.

## Alternatives

- Time Machine: Time Machine is the breakthrough automatic backup that’s built right into Mac OS X.
- Windows File History: File History protects files from within the libraries, desktop, favorites, and contacts folders and creates copies of the files.
- snapshot: Snapshot is a tool that creates a digital "photocopy" of your entire computer.
