KitchenOwl is a self-hosted grocery list and recipe manager for home cooks planning meals and shopping. It lets you build shopping lists from recipes and track ingredients you want to cook. It pairs with the separate KitchenOwl-Web container for mobile and web access.

## Common questions

### What should I change in the Docker Compose file before first start?

Replace JWT_SECRET_KEY from PLEASE_CHANGE_ME with a long random value before starting KitchenOwl. If you skip this, login tokens may be easier to forge.

### Why is KitchenOwl unreachable if port 80 is in use?

The front service uses port 80 on the server, so make sure it is free or change the 80:80 mapping to another free host port.

### What data should I back up?

KitchenOwl stores its recipes and settings in the kitchenowl_data volume. Keep this volume backed up because deleting or corrupting it can lose that data.

### How does online recipe import behave?

Importing recipes online can be inconvenient because ingredients often do not add automatically and must be typed manually.

### Are recipes and shopping lists shared across users?

Yes, recipes, shopping lists, and expenses are shared between users. It also tries to suggest recipes you have not cooked in a while and adapt to the typical order you remove items from the grocery list.
