Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Fill in your .env file first Before starting the stack, edit the .env file and set SEARXNG_HOSTNAME to the address you will use, such as mysearx.example.com, and set LETSENCRYPT_EMAIL if you want a real HTTPS certificate. These values are copied into Caddy's web front-door config, so a missing or wrong hostname can make the site unreachable or certificate setup fail. source
  • Start it and keep the Docker volumes Run `docker compose up -d` to start Caddy, Valkey, and SearXNG in the background; Valkey is a fast in-memory cache used by the app. This also creates Docker volumes, which are separate storage areas managed by Docker, named caddy-data, caddy-config, valkey-data2, and searxng-data; keep them safe because they hold the setup's state, and deleting them can wipe settings or cached data. source
  • Make it start again after a reboot If you want SearXNG to come back automatically when your server reboots, copy the systemd service template, adjust the install path if needed, then enable and start it with systemctl, the Linux service manager. Without enabling it, the setup may stay stopped after a reboot until you start it manually. source

Common questions

Does Searx crawl the web itself?

No, it queries existing search-engine APIs and applies its own sorting rather than acting as a standalone crawler.

Does running Searx expose my server IP to the searched engines?

Upstream connections can reveal your server IP to the engines queried, and using a VPS only shifts that trust to the VPS provider.

Is rate limiting enabled by default on a self-hosted Searx?

It has strict rate limiting by default, and tuning it can help protect a public instance from bots.

Can Searx be installed with common web servers?

The documentation includes installation paths using uwsgi with nginx or Apache, as well as Docker.
