Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Make sure the piper command-line tool is ready Install and configure the piper command-line tool before running any steps, because the examples assume it is already available. Without it, commands such as piper githubCreatePullRequest will not start. source
  • Replace example values in the config Before running a step, replace placeholder settings in your config file (often named config.yml) with the values for your own system. If you leave the examples in place, piper will fail or send data to the wrong destination. source
  • Keep sensitive config values protected Store sensitive values as named credential IDs (saved login references) or in a secure store, not directly in the config file. Keeping the config file safe and readable only by trusted people helps stop those secrets from leaking. source
  • Configuration Set the Piper voice, Wyoming URI, data directory, and download directory in the configuration. source

Common questions

What port should the Wyoming Piper server use for Home Assistant?

The Home Assistant example listens on port 10200.

Which directories do the run examples use for Piper data and downloads?

The examples pass --data-dir and --download-dir, such as /data.

Why might a voice be missing from the advertised Piper voices?

Voices that require an uninstalled phonemizer are not advertised. The voice reappears once the required extra is installed.

How do I enable the experimental OmniVoice backend?

Install the OmniVoice dependencies, select --backend omnivoice, and point --omnivoice-ref-dir at a directory organized by language and voice.
