Cronicle is a multi-server task scheduler and runner, with a web based front-end UI. It handles both scheduled, repeating and on-demand jobs, targeting any number of worker servers, with real-time stats and live log viewer. It's basically a fancy Cron replacement written in Node.js. You can give it simple shell commands, or write Plugins in virtually any language. A huge thank you to github.com/jhuckab for the Cronicle project and github.com/soulteary for the container!

How is this calculated?

A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Install Cronicle with the script Run this install command as the system admin account (root): curl -s https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jhuckaby/Cronicle/master/bin/install.js | node. It puts Cronicle in /opt/cronicle so setup and start have a known place to work. source
  • Run the one-time setup command On the main Cronicle server, run bin/control.sh setup from the /opt/cronicle folder after installation. This performs the initial setup Cronicle expects, so the service has the basic configuration needed before it starts. source
  • Start the service after setup After setup finishes, run /opt/cronicle/bin/control.sh start. If the service is not running, the web interface will not load and scheduled jobs will not start. source

Common questions

What do I need to do after installing Cronicle before the web interface works?

Installation puts Cronicle in /opt/cronicle. On the main server, run bin/control.sh setup from that folder, then run bin/control.sh start; if the service is not running, the web interface will not load and scheduled jobs will not start.

What happens if I change a Cronicle server's hostname?

Cronicle uses hostnames to determine cluster membership and which server can become master. If the hostname changes, Cronicle can no longer find the server in one of its internal lists.

Does Cronicle show live logs for jobs?

Yes, it provides real-time stats and a live log viewer.

Is Cronicle overkill for a small home server?

One user said it seems really overkill for a home server and used Webmin on the Ubuntu host to manage cron jobs through a web UI instead.
