First-install notes
- Let only your web server reach Homebox In the secure setup example, Homebox listens on a Unix socket (a local file used for private connections) at /run/homebox.sock instead of a normal network port. Set SocketGroup=caddy and SocketMode=0660 so only your Caddy web server can connect, which stops other programs or browsers from reaching Homebox directly. source
- A private network can cause an update error If you start Homebox with systemd-run PrivateNetwork=yes, it blocks all internet access, so the log may show a failed GitHub release check. That error is expected in this mode; Homebox still works, but it cannot check for newer versions. source

Common questions
What permission change is required for the Homebox rootless Docker image?
Create the data folder in advance and chown it to 65532:65532 before mounting it into the container.
How can I expose Homebox only through a Caddy reverse proxy?
Configure Homebox to listen on the Unix socket /run/homebox.sock, and set SocketGroup=caddy and SocketMode=0660 so only Caddy can connect.
What storage model should I expect when backing up Homebox?
Homebox uses SQLite and an embedded Web UI, which is meant to make deploying, using, and backing up the app easier.
Why does Homebox show a failed GitHub release check when run with PrivateNetwork=yes?
PrivateNetwork=yes blocks internet access, so the release check fails. The app still works, but it cannot check for newer versions.
How do I switch from the archived original Homebox to the forked project?
Use the forked project's new namespace and the Docker image published with the v0.11.0 release, which is intended to make switching easier.
