Ebook2audiobook converts legally acquired eBooks without digital rights management into audiobooks with chapters and metadata on a CPU (central processing unit) or GPU (graphics processing unit). It uses Calibre, FFmpeg, XTTSv2, Fairseq, and other text-to-speech (TTS) engines to create spoken audio, with voice cloning and multilingual support. It is useful for homelab users who want to generate customized audiobooks from e-book files while preserving organization and metadata.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Run installer, then activate env After cloning the project, run the `./ebook2audiobook.command` script (or `ebook2audiobook.cmd` on Windows), then activate the project’s `./python_env` Python environment (a separate toolbox of installed programs). Skipping this leaves required tools missing, which makes the app fail to start with import errors. source
  • Start the browser interface Open the `E2A-SML` folder and run `python cli.py --gui` to open the web page for processing books. This gives you the visual first-run controls instead of typing every job as a raw command. source
  • Use --share for another device If you want to open the app on a phone, tablet, or second computer, launch it with `--share`, for example `python app.py --share`. That creates a temporary public web link; without it, the interface only appears on the machine running the app. source
  • NVIDIA GPU support For Nvidia GPU support, add --runtime=nvidia --gpus all to the Extra Parameters field under Advanced. source

Common questions

Is ebook2audiobook intended for DRM-protected books?

No. The project says it is intended for use with non-DRM, legally acquired eBooks only.

Which Docker paths should I map for a clean self-hosted setup?

Map temporary files, models, and audiobook output to your appdata instead of leaving them inside the container image.

What local installation step prevents import errors before launching the GUI?

Run the installer script and then activate the project's ./python_env Python environment. After that, open the E2A-SML folder and run python cli.py --gui.

How can I open the GUI from a phone, tablet, or second computer?

Start the app with --share, for example python app.py --share, which creates a temporary public web link. Without --share, the interface is only visible on the machine running the app.

Which TTS engines can ebook2audiobook use?

It supports XTTSv2, Bark, Fairseq, VITS, Tacotron2, Tortoise, GlowTTS, and YourTTS.
