  • Tools & Utilities
SerpBear is an open-source search engine position tracking application that monitors your website's keyword rankings in Google and notifies you when their positions change. It supports unlimited domains and keywords, sends daily, weekly, or monthly email alerts, and exposes a SERP (search engine results page) API for keyword research, making it a self-hosted ranking and monitoring tool for site owners tracking organic search visibility. A third-party scraping service or proxy is required to query Google's search results.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Set up .env.local before starting Create .env.local (the file where SerpBear reads login and API settings) and fill in the admin username and password, a secret key of at least 32 characters, the scraper service name and API key (the service that fetches Google results), and optional Google Search Console credentials. If these are missing or wrong, you can't sign in, SerpBear can't fetch search results, and Search Console features source
  • Keep data/settings.json safe Keep a copy of data/settings.json, the file where SerpBear saves your site and keyword settings. If that file becomes corrupted, the app may not load your settings, even though it may save a backup copy for recovery. source
  • Add Google Search Console keys If you want keyword and page stats from Google Search Console (Google's free search stats dashboard), enter the service-account email and private key (a special Google account's credentials that let SerpBear read your site's Search Console data). Without those credentials, those Search Console features won't show clicks, impressions, or average position. source

Common questions

Which credentials and environment variables must be set before running SerpBear?

Create .env.local with the admin username and password, a secret key of at least 32 characters, the scraper service name and API key, and optional Google Search Console credentials. Missing or wrong values can block sign-in, result fetching, and Search Console features.

Does SerpBear need a third-party scraper or proxy to fetch Google rankings?

Yes, it uses third-party scrapers or proxy IPs to scrape Google search results for a certain keyword and check your domain.

Which file should be backed up to preserve site and keyword settings?

Keep a copy of data/settings.json because it stores your site and keyword settings. If it becomes corrupted, SerpBear may not load your settings, though it may save a backup copy for recovery.

What Google Search Console credentials are required for Search Console stats?

Enter the service-account email and private key for the Google account whose Search Console data SerpBear should read. Without those credentials, Search Console features will not show clicks, impressions, or average position.
