WeeWX is open-source software that collects data from many types of weather stations and sensors, then generates plots, HTML pages, and monthly and yearly summary reports that it can push to web servers or upload to online weather services. This container pre-installs the interceptor and MQTT extensions.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Create your station before starting WeeWX In a terminal, activate the WeeWX virtual environment (a separate software folder) with source ~/weewx-venv/bin/activate, then run weectl station create. This guided setup creates your main settings, web-page designs, and data folder, so without it WeeWX does not know what station to read or where to store readings. source
  • Set WeeWX to run as a background service Run the setup script with administrator rights (sudo sh ~/weewx-data/scripts/setup-daemon.sh) so your computer can start and stop WeeWX as a background program that keeps collecting data. If you skip this, WeeWX may only run while a terminal is open and will not keep collecting data automatically. source
  • Start the service after setup After that setup, start WeeWX with the command for your system, for example sudo systemctl start weewx on many Linux computers. This actually begins the background program, so it can start collecting and publishing weather data. source

Common questions

Which database backends can WeeWX use for storing weather data?

WeeWX supports SQLite and MySQL.

What can cause WeeWX reports not to run?

If reports are not run all the time or periodically, the problem could be an inadvertent or incorrect setting of report_timing in weewx.conf.

What network issue do users report when self-hosting a WeeWX site behind CGNAT?

Users have reported trouble with ISP CGNAT and MQTT/WebSocket publishing, and have asked whether Apache on a Raspberry Pi can be used to keep the site on the LAN.

Do users need Python experience to run WeeWX?

No programming experience is necessary unless you wish to extend WeeWX. If extending it, some familiarity with Python is recommended.
