UniFi Camera Proxy brings non-UniFi RTSP cameras into the UniFi Protect ecosystem. It lets homelab users stream, record, and run motion detection and Smart Detections (via Frigate) on third-party cameras using the same UniFi Protect UI and mobile app as native devices.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Enter your UniFi controller details Run the interactive setup command, unifi config init, and enter the controller host and API key (the secret token UniFi uses for authentication). If these are missing or wrong, the app cannot connect to UniFi or list devices and cameras. source
  • Log in to UniFi Protect for cameras Provide the UniFi Protect host (its network address, like https://192.168.1.1) and a username/password that can access the cameras. Without a valid Protect login, the camera proxy cannot fetch camera names, hosts, or firmware info. source
  • Allow self-signed HTTPS if needed If your home UniFi controller uses a self-signed certificate, set accept_invalid_certs (the option that ignores an untrusted HTTPS certificate) to allow the connection. Otherwise the app may stop with a certificate error even though the controller is reachable. source
  • Create a client certificate Copy server.pem from an existing UniFi camera (scp ubnt@<camera>:/var/etc/persistent/server.pem client.pem), or generate one via openssl with CN=camera.ubnt.dev, and place it as client.pem in the config folder (/mnt/user/appdata/unifi-cam-proxy). source
  • Obtain a Protect API token Open https://<NVR-IP>/proxy/protect/api/cameras/manage-payload on your UniFi Protect NVR and adjust the post parameters as needed to register the proxied camera. source

Common questions

Can proxied RTSP cameras appear in the same UniFi Protect UI and mobile app?

Yes, the project enables RTSP-enabled cameras to be used in the same UI and mobile app as other UniFi devices.

Has UniFi Cam Proxy stayed compatible with newer UniFi Protect releases?

A Home Assistant post reports the project has been broken with newer Protect versions and that the Docker image was outdated.

How do I create the client certificate required for a proxied camera?

Copy server.pem from an existing UniFi camera to client.pem, or generate one via openssl with CN=camera.ubnt.dev. Place it as client.pem in the config folder, such as /mnt/user/appdata/unifi-cam-proxy.
