Allows the installation of Nightscout, a remote CGM monitoring system. It allows the upload and display of blood glucous values and can be configuered to issue warnings etc. This is mainly useful to diabetics. For more information see: http://www.nightscout.info/ Note that this container only contains the required data to run the website. For data logging, a MongoDB instance is necessary. Configuration of Nightscout is done over variables that are passed through Docker. For ease of use, only required and important variables are exposed by default. For an extensive list of all variables, please refer to: https://github.com/nightscout/cgm-remote-monitor#environment

How is this calculated?

A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Set up Docker before starting Nightscout Install Docker, start the Docker service, then download nightscout-docker and edit the docker-compose.yml (the settings file for the container) before starting it. Without this, Nightscout won’t launch correctly or won’t know where to get and protect your CGM data. source
  • Use specific permissions for data sources When you set who can access Nightscout, choose a specific permission for each job instead of the all-powerful * permission. If you give full admin to a simple data source, it can read or change things it should not touch. source
  • Check profile settings before relying on them If you add a profile, fill in the units, target range, and insulin settings like DIA and carb ratio so alerts and calculations match your pump or plan. If these are missing or wrong, Nightscout can show confusing numbers or give misleading alerts. source

Common questions

What must I do before starting Nightscout with the standalone Docker setup?

Install and start Docker first, then download nightscout-docker and edit the docker-compose.yml before starting it. Without this, Nightscout may not launch correctly or know where to get and protect your CGM data.

How can I keep the Nightscout API secret out of the Docker Compose environment?

Use API_SECRET_FILE instead of placing the secret in the container environment. Create a local file containing only the secret and protect it with filesystem permissions.

Can I expose a self-hosted Nightscout instance without a static IP address?

Yes. Using Docker Compose with Cloudflare Tunnel lets you run Nightscout on your own server and provide secure remote access even without a static IP.

Should uploaders or integrations be given the * API permission?

No. Assign a specific permission to each data source or job instead of the * wildcard. A simple data source should not have full admin access because it could read or change data it should not touch.

Why might Nightscout show confusing numbers or misleading alerts?

Check the profile settings before relying on them. If units, target range, DIA, or carb ratio are missing or wrong, Nightscout can produce confusing numbers or misleading alerts.
