First-install notes
- Start with a dedicated test file Point Fio at a dedicated file or empty folder, such as mydata.bin, because Fio writes real files and can fill the disk or touch data if you aim it at the wrong place. source
- Run the server on the machine being tested If you use Fio's client/server mode, start fio --server on the machine whose storage you actually want to test, because that server is the one that runs the disk workload. source
- Allow port 8765 for client-server mode If the client and server are on different machines, allow port 8765 through any firewall on the server machine, otherwise the client cannot connect to run the test. source

Common questions
What should I point Fio-Tester at to avoid overwriting real data?
Point it at a dedicated test file or empty folder, such as mydata.bin, because Fio writes real files and can fill the disk or touch data if aimed at the wrong place.
How do I run a Fio test against another machine’s storage?
Use client/server mode and start fio --server on the machine whose storage you want to test. If the client is on another machine, allow port 8765 through the firewall on the server machine.
Is there an Unraid container for Fio-Tester?
There is a Fio-Tester Unraid container based on the Flexible I/O Tester Docker image. It helps homelab users run, configure, or troubleshoot I/O workload tests.
How can I get notified about recent Fio commits?
The fio project mailing list receives automated emails detailing recent commits at most daily.
