Unraid Config Guardian automatically documents your Unraid server configuration, generating docker-compose files, restoration scripts, and system backups for complete server recreation in under 30 minutes after a flash drive failure. Built for self-hosters who need a reliable disaster recovery safety net without writing custom backup scripts.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Docker Socket Proxy Required Install the dockersocket container from the Unraid Community Apps page, then add the environment variable IMAGES=1 to that container. Without this variable the Docker socket proxy returns a 403 error and Config Guardian cannot read running containers. source
  • Web Interface Access After installation, open the Config Guardian web UI at http://<your-unraid-ip>:7842 in a browser to manage backups and view generated restoration files. source

Common questions

What port and mounts does the quick install use?

The quick install uses port 7842 and mounts /config for app data, /output for backups, /var/run/docker.sock read-only, and /boot read-only.

How do I configure scheduled backups?

Set the SCHEDULE environment variable to a cron expression, such as 0 2 * * 0 for a weekly backup.

What causes permission denied errors when writing backups?

It is caused by a mismatch between the container user permissions and the host directory ownership.

What files are included in a generated backup?

The backup contains container-templates.zip, docker-compose.yml, unraid-config.json, restore.sh, changes.log, and README.md.

How do I restore an Unraid system from a Config Guardian backup?

Install a fresh Unraid array, run restore.sh from the latest backup, add containers from the templates, and copy app data back from separate backups.
