How is this calculated?

A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Start the web service after installing Open a command prompt and run `jupyverse` after installation to start the web service (a small program that listens for browser connections). Without it running, the browser has nothing to connect to. source
  • Add optional extensions Use `jupyter labextension install <package-name>` to add an extension (extra software that adds features). Without this step, JupyterLab will not include that feature. source
  • Keep the local extension settings The `build_config.json` file records local extension folders (software installed from your own files) and core extensions you removed. Keep it intact, because if it is lost or changed wrongly, those local extensions may stop loading. source

Common questions

What must I start after installing JupyterLab for a browser-based self-hosted setup?

Start the web service after installation. Without that service running, the browser has nothing to connect to.

Which local file should I keep intact when backing up JupyterLab extension settings?

Keep build_config.json intact because it records local extension folders and core extensions you removed. If it is lost or changed wrongly, those local extensions may stop loading.

Can a self-hosted multi-user Jupyter setup use external authentication?

A multi-user Jupyter deployment can manage users and authentication with PAM, OAuth, or your own directory service system.

What should I do if I am still running JupyterLab 3?

Upgrade to JupyterLab 4 as soon as possible. JupyterLab 3 reached end of maintenance on May 15, 2024, and critical fixes were backported only until December 31, 2024.
