  • Initialize the repository and keep your password Create the backup repository with restic init (the command that prepares a new restic storage location) and set a strong password when prompted. Losing that password makes the backups unrecoverable because restic cannot decrypt them. source
  • Check the REST API version your setup uses Check which REST API (web interface) version your setup uses, because version 1 returns only stored item names while version 2 also returns their sizes. Expecting the wrong response can break clients that parse the REST web service. source
  • Set Alibaba OSS credentials and location If you use Alibaba OSS (Alibaba object storage), set your access key and secret securely, and match the bucket endpoint (web address) and region (location) before restic init. Wrong endpoint or region stops restic from finding the bucket. source
