Based on 3 of 4 factors.

How is this calculated?

A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Install the Python library with pip Run pip install python-ipmi first; this is the recommended way to install the library and makes sure your Python environment has what it needs to import pyipmi. source
  • Have ipmitool ready for LAN connections Make sure the ipmitool command is installed and reachable, then fill in the server's management controller (BMC) IP, port 623 (the usual IPMI network port), username, password, and target IPMB address/routing in your script. If those details are wrong, IPMI won't accept the session and you won't be able to send commands. source
  • For serial connections, set port and speed If you connect through a serial terminal, choose the exact serial port and baud rate, such as /dev/tty2 and 115200. Using the wrong port or speed means your computer and the server won't understand each other. source

Common questions

What IPMI connection details should I provide so IPMI-Tools can reach a remote server over LAN?

Use the server BMC IP, the usual IPMI network port 623, username, password, and target IPMB address/routing. If those details are wrong, IPMI will not accept the session.

What if I lock myself out of remote IPMI management for the server managed by IPMI-Tools?

You need to use an IPMI tool directly on the box with a keyboard and monitor, because remote IPMI management is locked out. Once back in, creating another account can help test the password.

Will a colocation provider always give me the IPMI network access IPMI-Tools needs?

Not always. Some colo centers give a dedicated IP for IPMI, while others require payment, so it depends on the provider.

Can IPMI-Tools manage a server when the host operating system is not running?

BMCs provide out-of-band management independent of the host operating system, enabling remote power control, hardware health monitoring, and console access.

How can IPMI fan tools be used on Unraid to adjust fan behavior?

The suggested approach is to set the IPMI fan profile to full speed and then use ipmitool or the Ipmifan plugin to adjust thresholds and fan curves.
