Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Match container UID/GID to host If you build the image yourself, set the UID and GID build arguments to the user and group IDs that own your files on the host. This prevents permission problems where Nginx cannot read or write files because it runs as the wrong user. source
  • Use /tmp for Nginx temp folders If your container is locked down so its main filesystem is read-only (it can only be read, not written), add the temp path settings to Nginx's http block so temporary files go in /tmp. Without them, Nginx may fail with read-only file system errors during normal requests. source
  • Configuration Nginx configuration lives inside the container; open the Docker console and edit files under /etc/nginx. source

Common questions

How can I prevent Nginx container permission errors when my host files are owned by a different user?

If you build the image, set the UID and GID build arguments to the user and group IDs that own your files on the host. This prevents Nginx from running as the wrong user and failing to read or write files.

Why might a site show the default Nginx welcome page instead of the deployed application?

Seeing the default Welcome to nginx page instead of a website is a common configuration issue. The Nginx site or server configuration is the likely place to check.

How do I enable the ngx-php embedded PHP module in nginx.conf?

Add load_module modules/ndk_http_module.so and load_module modules/ngx_http_php_module.so at the top of nginx.conf.

What PHP coding patterns should be avoided when using ngx-php?

Global variables, static variables inside classes, and singleton patterns are unsafe for per-request use. Native IO functions work, but they slow down Nginx.

How should SSL be handled if Nginx is reverse-proxying local backends?

A common approach is to terminate SSL at the reverse proxy and use plain connections to backend servers when all traffic stays on the LAN.
