Passthrough VPN

A Docker container that provides a shared WireGuard or OpenVPN tunnel for other containers lacking native VPN support.

  • Network Services
  • Tools & Utilities
A Docker container that provides a shared WireGuard or OpenVPN tunnel for other containers lacking native VPN support. Route traffic from your non-VPN containers through it to mask their public IP, with an iptables killswitch that prevents IP leakage if the tunnel drops.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Startup IP Exposure Any container routed through Passthrough VPN briefly exposes its real IP while the container establishes the VPN connection. Once the tunnel is up, traffic is masked. An iptables killswitch prevents further leakage if the tunnel drops later. source

Common questions

Will containers routed through PassthroughVPN expose my real IP before the VPN connects?

Yes. Any container routed through it briefly uses your real IP until the PassthroughVPN container establishes a VPN connection, and it will keep doing so if your VPN provider is unreachable.

What happens if the VPN connection drops while using PassthroughVPN?

It uses an iptables killswitch to prevent IP leakage by rebooting the container when the tunnel goes down. If RESTART_CONTAINER is set to yes, it restarts on loss, but routed containers lose connection and need manual restart or the restart-passed-through-containers script.

Can I host a game or web server through PassthroughVPN?

Yes, you can route a game or webserver through it to use your VPN provider's IP. This likely only works if your VPN provider supports port forwarding.

Does PassthroughVPN support both WireGuard and OpenVPN?

Yes, the container supports WireGuard and OpenVPN.
