First-install notes

  • Add Namecheap API details and current IP Fill in the provider with user_name, api_user, api_key, client_ip, and normally use_sandbox = false. If those are missing or wrong, especially an old client_ip, Namecheap will reject the DNS update and nothing changes. source
  • Pick OVERWRITE or MERGE carefully If you already have DNS records, use mode = "MERGE" so Terraform only changes the records you list. OVERWRITE replaces the entire record set and can delete mail, subdomains, or other entries. source
  • Set email_type if the domain needs mail If the domain should handle email, set email_type to match your mail setup and add the required mail records. The wrong combination can cause mail to bounce or go to the wrong place. source

Common questions

Which Namecheap credential should I provide to Namecheap-DDNS?

Set NAMECHEAP_DDNS_TOKEN to the Dynamic DNS Password from Namecheap's Advanced DNS control panel. It is not your Namecheap login password.

Does the domain need any special Namecheap DNS setup?

Dynamic DNS must be enabled, and the domain must be pointed to Namecheap BasicDNS, PremiumDNS, or FreeDNS.

Can I update several subdomains or force a specific IP?

You can pass multiple subdomains with -s or NAMECHEAP_DDNS_SUBDOMAIN, and optionally set a specific IP with -i or NAMECHEAP_DDNS_IP. If no IP is provided, the updater uses the IP used to make the request.

How can I schedule the updater on a Linux host?

Create a systemd service with the required environment variables and ExecStart path, then add a corresponding timer for scheduled runs.

Can I use the same tool outside the container?

Yes, you can download pre-compiled binaries or install it with cargo install namecheap-ddns.
