Rotki is an open source portfolio tracking, analytics, accounting, and tax reporting tool that protects your privacy. The mission of rotki is to bring transparency into the crypto and financial sectors through the use of open source. Most importantly, unlike virtually every other competing service which consists of closed source SaaS onto which you are forced to hand over all your financial data, with rotki your data is stored encrypted locally in your computer. It enables you to take ownership of your financial data!

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Set and keep the database key If the app uses an encrypted data file, write down the unlock key immediately. If that key is lost, the data cannot be opened and is effectively gone. source
  • Set the database file path Choose the folder where the app's data file (its database) is saved, ideally somewhere you can back up. If the path is wrong, the app may create a new database or fail to find your existing one. source
  • Leave connection timeout default The timeout controls how long the app waits if the data file is briefly locked by another process. If it is too short, ordinary use can fail with a database-locked error. source

Common questions

What database configuration details should I keep for an encrypted local data file?

Write down the unlock key immediately, because a lost key means the data cannot be opened and is effectively gone. Also choose a database file path that you can back up, since a wrong path may make the app create a new database or fail to find the existing one.
