Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes
- Create postgres user and data folder Create a dedicated postgres account and a data folder owned by that account before initializing PostgreSQL. If the folder is owned by the wrong user, PostgreSQL can fail to start or write data because of permission errors. source
- Initialize the database before starting it Run initdb (the command that creates the database files) against that data folder before starting the server. Without this, PostgreSQL has no database to load, so the server will not start. source
- Start Postgres as postgres, not root Use the postgres account when running pg_ctl (the PostgreSQL start/stop helper) to start the server. Starting as root can create root-owned data files and is less secure, which can cause later permission problems. source

Common questions
Does pg_cron need special handling when using Postgres in Docker?
pg_cron is not included in the default Postgres Docker image. You usually need to extend the image or adjust docker-compose to install and use it.
What data-directory permission issue can prevent PostgreSQL from starting?
Create a dedicated postgres account and a data folder owned by that account before initializing PostgreSQL. If the folder is owned by the wrong user, PostgreSQL can fail to start or write data because of permission errors.
Can I start PostgreSQL as root in a self-hosted setup?
Use the postgres account when running pg_ctl to start the server. Starting as root can create root-owned data files and is less secure, which can cause later permission problems.
What ongoing operations am I responsible for when self-hosting PostgreSQL?
You become fully accountable for backups, downtime, and patching. You should verify that you can actually restore from your backups.
