First-install notes

  • Install youtubedr before downloading Install the youtubedr program first, using the method listed for your system. It is the part that actually fetches the YouTube stream, so download attempts will fail if it is missing. source
  • Check ffmpeg for HD downloads Run the ffmpeg command to see if it is installed, and if it fails, install it and add it to your PATH (the folder list your terminal searches for programs). Higher-quality downloads use it to combine video and audio, so without it those downloads can fail. source
