ChirpStack is an open-source LoRaWAN Network Server which can be used to setup private or public LoRaWAN networks. ChirpStack provides a web-interface for the management of gateways, devices and tenants as well to setup data integrations with the major cloud providers, databases and services commonly used for handling device data. ChirpStack provides a gRPC based API that can be used to integrate or extend ChirpStack. Required: redis, postgresql, mqtt server example mosquitto

How is this calculated?

A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Start the stack and open the web UI Run `docker compose up` to start all the app services, or add `-d` to keep it running in the background. Then open http://localhost:8080; without this, the web setup page is not available. source
  • Pick the right LoRaWAN region Set the LoRaWAN region (the radio-frequency setting for your country, like EU868 or US915) and keep the gateway settings matching it. If it is wrong, gateways and devices may use the wrong frequencies and will not communicate. source
  • Import common device templates If the make tool is installed, run `make import-device-profiles` to add ready-made settings for common LoRaWAN devices. This is optional, but it saves you from creating each device profile by hand. source

Common questions

How do I start ChirpStack from the Docker stack and reach the web setup page?

Run docker compose up, or add -d to keep it running in the background. Then open port 8080 on the host; without this, the web setup page is not available.

How can I add ready-made LoRaWAN device profiles after Docker setup?

If make is installed, run make import-device-profiles to import common device templates. This is optional and avoids creating each device profile by hand.

What should I check if gateways and devices do not communicate after setting the LoRaWAN region?

Set the correct LoRaWAN region and keep the gateway settings matching it. A mismatch can make gateways and devices use the wrong frequencies and fail to communicate.

Can I compile ChirpStack with SQLite instead of PostgreSQL?

By default, ChirpStack is built with the PostgreSQL database backend. Set the DATABASE=sqlite environment variable to compile it with SQLite.

Can I cross-compile ChirpStack inside the provided Docker devshell?

The provided Docker devshell can run tests and cargo build, but cross-compiling will not work because it would try to start Docker within Docker.
