Databasus is a free, open-source, self-hosted database backup tool. It creates database backups to remote storage destinations such as cloud storage, Google Drive, and file servers, and sends progress notifications through Slack, Discord, Telegram, and similar channels. Self-hosters use it to keep database backups on remote storage and receive status alerts without writing custom scripts.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Linux: run the auto install script If you're on Linux, run the provided install command in a terminal so it installs Docker (the tool that runs app containers), Docker Compose (the helper that starts the app's pieces), and sets Databasus to start after reboot. Without it, you may miss required software or find Databasus isn't running after the machine restarts. source

Common questions

What does the recommended Linux install script do?

It installs Docker and Docker Compose if they are missing, sets up Databasus, and configures automatic startup after reboot. Without it, Databasus may not be running after the machine restarts.

Can I deploy Databasus with Caddy?

Yes, Docker Compose with Caddy is listed as an installation option for production deployments.

Does Databasus support point-in-time recovery?

Yes, WAL streaming continuously captures the database write stream, enabling point-in-time recovery.

How can I confirm a backup is restorable?

Databasus can perform a real restore in a database container, check the restored size against the backup, and report row counts for every table.

What format does Databasus use for logical PostgreSQL backups?

It uses pg_dump custom format with zstd compression instead of raw SQL dump format.
