First-install notes

  • Create and edit the config file Copy config/selfhosted.yaml.example to config/selfhosted.yaml, then fill in jwt_secret (a key for signing login sessions), database, and smtp settings. These are the main settings Donetick needs to start safely and connect to your data; leaving them empty can stop startup or make logins unsafe. source
  • Start it with Docker Compose Once the config file is ready, run docker-compose up -d to start Donetick in the background. If you run the donetick binary directly instead, set DT_ENV=selfhosted and DT_JWT_SECRET, or it will not know it is self-hosted or how to sign logins. source
  • Set up MFA and save backup codes After logging in, start MFA setup to get a QR code and backup codes. Scan the QR code in an authenticator app and save the backup codes somewhere safe, because they are your fallback if you lose access to your phone. source
