Nethermind is the official Microsoft .NET implementation of the Ethereum protocol. It runs a full Ethereum execution node, synchronizes chain data, and provides a local endpoint for wallets, applications, and consensus clients. It is for homelabbers, Ethereum operators, and staking environments that need a self-hosted execution client. Use Nethermind when you want a widely used, actively maintained Ethereum client with Docker images.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Install or start Nethermind first Install Nethermind (the part of an Ethereum node that stores and runs blocks) with `sudo apt-get update` and `sudo apt-get install nethermind` on Linux, `winget install --id Nethermind.Nethermind` on Windows, or `brew install nethermind` on macOS; or, if using Docker (a container tool), run `docker run -it nethermind/nethermind:latest-chiseled`. If Nethermind is not installed and running, other Et source
  • Set the KZG setup file path If your setup uses a local KZG file, set `Init.KzgSetupPath` to its location, for example with `--Init.KzgSetupPath /path/to/kzg`, where KZG is a trusted setup file Ethereum uses for certain newer data. Without the path, Nethermind will not know where to find that file, which can block startup or cause sync problems if the file is required. source
  • Connect Lighthouse to Nethermind If you use Lighthouse (a separate consensus client that checks valid blocks), start it with `--execution-endpoint http://localhost:8551` and `--execution-jwt path/to/jwt.hex` so it can reach Nethermind. The endpoint must point to a reachable Nethermind port 8551, and the JWT file is a shared password file that both must match; without both, the consensus client cannot connect. source

Common questions

How do I connect a consensus client like Lighthouse to Nethermind?

Start Lighthouse with the execution endpoint set to localhost port 8551 and the execution JWT set to your jwt.hex file. The endpoint must be reachable by Nethermind, and both clients must use the same JWT file.

What KZG setting can block startup or cause sync problems?

If your setup uses a local KZG file, set Init.KzgSetupPath to the file location. Without that path, Nethermind may not know where to find the file, which can block startup or cause sync problems if the file is required.

Do OP Stack operators need a separate op-node with Nethermind?

No, Nethermind builds a rollup node directly into the client for OP Stack operators. It fully replaces the separate op-node and reduces the stack from two services to one.

How can self-hosters monitor Nethermind?

Nethermind exposes node health and performance through a built-in UI and Prometheus metrics.

Can Nethermind keep existing Geth wallets and applications working after migration?

Nethermind supports the same JSON-RPC API as Geth, so it can serve as a local endpoint for wallets and applications.
