First-install notes

  • Set your network values first In the examples, set ETH_ADDR, ETH_DNS, ETH_GATEWAY, and ETH_MASK (the IP address, DNS server, gateway, and network mask) before starting. If they are wrong, the ESP32 cannot get a working network address and you cannot reach its web page. source
  • Allow web port 80 The examples create the web server on port 80, the standard port for web pages. If your router or firewall blocks it, a browser cannot load the page. source
  • Wait for Ethernet before start Call ESP32_W5500_waitForConnect() before server.begin(). If the Ethernet connection is not ready, the web server can start too early and fail to respond to your browser. source
  • Directory Layout The default /var/www mapping provides cron/ for scheduled tasks, html/ for website files, ini/ for Apache and PHP configuration overrides, and logs/ for server logs. source

Common questions

Does the webserver need port 80 open?

The examples create the web server on port 80, the standard web port. If your router or firewall blocks it, a browser cannot load the page.

Should PHP run directly or behind a webserver?

The common setup is to run PHP behind a webserver such as Apache or nginx with PHP-FPM. Static assets are served directly, while PHP requests are handled by the PHP engine.

How do I switch Apache to PHP 8.2?

On an Apache setup, enable the php8.2 module and disable the previous PHP module with a2enmod and a2dismod. This is the approach discussed for moving a Nextcloud Apache instance to PHP 8.2.

What PHP issues can break a self-hosted app?

Common PHP issues include misconfigured PHP settings, memory limits, and module compatibility problems. These can disrupt the smooth running of a PHP-dependent self-hosted application.
