First-install notes

  • Add Panko to your Gemfile Put gem 'panko_serializer' in your Gemfile, then run bundle install. This installs the Panko library; without it, your app cannot use Panko classes and will error when it tries to serialize data. source
  • Create a serializer class first Write a Panko::Serializer class for each model you want to send, and list the fields it may expose. This tells Panko which data to include; without it, you cannot serialize that model and may get errors or no useful JSON. source
  • Send JSON from Rails controllers In a Rails controller, use Panko::Response with render json: to return the API data. This sends the finished JSON to the client; without it, the serializer output never reaches the request. source
