First-install notes

  • GPU Transcoding Setup For Intel QuickSync, set the Intel GPU variable to /dev/dri. For NVIDIA, install the Nvidia-Driver plugin from Community Apps, add --runtime=nvidia to Extra Parameters, set NVIDIA Visible Devices to all in Advanced View, and remove the Intel GPU variable. Do not set the Intel GPU variable if not using Intel QuickSync. source
  • Network Configuration The --net=host option is required for Channels to discover your Channels DVR Server via Bonjour. Docker for Mac and Docker for Windows do not support --net=host; on those platforms, connect to the DVR server by IP address instead. source

Common questions

How do I make recordings deletable from a Windows SMB share?

Set PUID and PGID to your intended share permissions and use UMASK=0000 so the container writes files with Windows-compatible permissions.

What network mode does the container expect?

Use host networking, as the example and Docker Compose set network_mode to host.

Does the container update itself?

The Channels DVR app updates itself like the official image, including pre-releases, while the base image is rebuilt monthly on the 1st for security patches.

How do I enable NVIDIA GPU transcoding?

Use nvidia-container-toolkit and set NVIDIA_DRIVER_CAPABILITIES to compute,video,utility.

What volumes should I persist?

Map a config directory to /channels-dvr and a recordings directory to your DVR share path.
