Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes
- If using Alpine, run the script If you are on Alpine Linux, run the provided installer script instead of downloading the package by hand. It detects your CPU architecture (the type of computer it runs on) and installs the latest OpenTofu, so you avoid installing an unsupported or mismatched version. source
- Give tofu init backend settings If your remote state backend (where OpenTofu stores its saved changes) needs configuration, add values with -backend-config flags when you run tofu init. Without the right settings, OpenTofu may not find or connect to the state backend you intend to use. source
- Cache provider downloads (optional) Set TF_PLUGIN_CACHE_DIR (a setting that tells OpenTofu where to store downloaded plugins) to a folder like ~/.tofu.d/plugin-cache before running tofu init. This stores provider plugins in one shared place, so later runs reuse them instead of downloading the same files again. source
- Command-line interface usage OpenTofu is a command-line interface (CLI) tool. In interfaces that expose Post Arguments, supply the tofu command and flags you want to run. source
- Getting started Use the project's Getting Started guide for installation instructions. source

Common questions
How do I pass remote state backend settings to OpenTofu during init?
Add the required values with -backend-config flags when you run tofu init. If the backend settings are missing, OpenTofu may not find or connect to the state backend you intend to use.
Can I cache provider plugins so repeated tofu init runs do not re-download them?
Set TF_PLUGIN_CACHE_DIR to a folder such as ~/.tofu.d/plugin-cache before running tofu init. This stores provider plugins in a shared place so later runs can reuse them.
Can I switch from Terraform without rewriting my existing configuration?
OpenTofu is described as a drop-in replacement for Terraform that preserves your existing workflows and configurations.
Are OpenTofu nightly builds suitable for production?
No. Nightly builds are experimental, are not intended for production use, and are removed after 30 days.
What OpenTofu CI/CD issue was reported for self-managed GitLab?
A user reported a failed attempt to migrate Terraform CI/CD templates to the OpenTofu component on a self-managed GitLab install. They said they had to mirror a full repository and maintain it.
