Valkey is a Redis-compatible in-memory data store used by Immich, a self-hosted photo and video manager, as its cache and message queue (the redis service from Immich's official compose setup). It runs as a separate container on Immich's custom Docker network so the Immich server can reach it by container name. No configuration and no published ports are required, since it is only used internally over the shared network. It is required by the Immich server and is aimed at homelab users deploying Immich's split-container setup.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Set your Immich URL and API key Edit config.yaml and put your Immich server URL and application programming interface (API) key in immich_url and immich_api_key. These are required, and the kiosk will not show any photos without them. source
  • Use the downloaded config file Save the downloaded config.yaml in ./config and make sure the container can read it, because it holds the required Immich URL, API key, and display settings. Without a valid config file, the kiosk has nothing to connect to and will not show your photos. source
  • Launch the Android kiosk app Install either ImmichFrame or Fully Kiosk Browser, then use the Android Debug Bridge (adb) command from the docs to start it. If you skip this, the app is installed but does not automatically open the kiosk screen. source
  • First install No configuration or published ports are required. The container must join Immich's custom Docker network (immich) so the Immich server can reach it by its container name, immich-redis. source

Common questions

How can I keep Immich from losing Redis or PostgreSQL connectivity after updates on UNRAID?

Assign static IPs to the Redis and PostgreSQL containers. This is the networking fix discussed for Immich failing to connect to its databases after updates.

Why are database and Redis password fields missing in the Immich TrueNAS setup UI?

The reported issue is that the Immich installation/configuration UI does not display database and Redis password fields. It can be used to diagnose missing configuration fields during app setup.

Will a Redis licensing change force Immich to replace Redis?

Responders say open-source Redis usage in projects like Immich is not affected by the licensing change.

When should a new Valkey container image be built and published?

A new Docker image should be built and published after a new major, minor, or patch version of Valkey is released in the main Valkey repository.
