SimpleRTA is a browser-based real-time analyser (RTA), spectrograph, and audio meter for measuring frequency response and playback levels. All capture and analysis happens in the page, and audio never leaves the browser, keeping your measurements private. It suits homelabbers who want a lightweight, self-hosted RTA with no cloud services. Readings are relative dB values rather than calibrated, so use them for comparison instead of absolute SPL.

Based on 3 of 4 factors.

How is this calculated?

A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Put the widget in the right Übersicht folder Clone it into Übersicht’s widgets folder (Übersicht is the macOS menu-bar tool that hosts the widget) and make sure the folder is named exactly '_simple-bar'. If the folder name is wrong, the widget won’t load, so your bar may not appear. source
  • Check settings paths before first launch Open the JSON settings file (a text file that tells the bar what to show) before first launch and check that yabaiPath or aerospacePath points to your installed window-manager app, with windowManager set to match. If they don’t line up, the bar can start but may not show windows, spaces, or process info. source
  • Sign in to GitHub before using its widget If you want GitHub info, install the GitHub CLI (a command-line tool that talks to GitHub) and run gh auth login once. Without that sign-in, the widget has no permission to read your repos or issues, so it will show nothing useful. source
  • Microphone access needs HTTPS on the LAN Browsers only grant microphone access on localhost or over HTTPS. If you serve SimpleRTA over plain HTTP to other machines, the browser will refuse microphone access; put it behind your reverse proxy's TLS. source

Common questions

Why will a phone or laptop on my LAN refuse microphone access when SimpleRTA is served over HTTP?

Browsers only grant microphone access on localhost or over HTTPS. A plain HTTP address on your LAN will be denied, so put the app behind TLS.

What analysis views and meters are included?

It provides 1/3 to 1/48 octave RTA, a scrolling spectrograph, and a full-height peak/RMS meter.

Is the codebase written entirely by AI?

No. It is an AI-assisted project created with Claude Code, directed and reviewed by a human author.

How is the analysis chain verified?

The project uses 29 tests that pin power normalisation at every transform size and through every window, plus band-integration invariants.
