Uptime Kuma is an easy-to-use, self-hosted monitoring tool that tracks the availability of websites, APIs, network services, and Docker containers. It runs continuous checks over HTTP(S), TCP, ping, DNS, WebSocket, and push endpoints and sends alerts through more than 90 notification integrations when a service goes down, a practical fit for homelabbers who want reliable uptime monitoring without a paid platform.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Create the admin account on first run When Uptime Kuma starts for the first time, set the administrator username and password. If you skip this, it stays in first-run setup mode and you can't log in or manage monitors. source
  • Confirm the setup status before using it If Uptime Kuma seems empty or reports that setup is needed, finish the first-run setup step. This check only tells whether the admin account has been created yet, and the app is not ready for normal use until it has. source
  • Add optional two-factor login protection After the admin account works, you can set up two-factor authentication (2FA, a code from an authenticator app) using your current password. It helps protect the login if your password is shared or leaked, but it is optional. source

Common questions

Can I store Uptime Kuma's data on NFS?

No, NFS is not supported. Map the app data to a local directory or local volume instead.

How do I keep the dashboard off the public network?

It listens on all interfaces by default. Bind port 3001 to 127.0.0.1 in Docker if you want localhost-only access.

Why can't I log in after first startup?

Uptime Kuma must create the admin account on first run. If you skip this step, it remains in first-run setup mode and normal login is not available.

Where should I install Uptime Kuma when monitoring multiple hosts?

Consider failure domains when choosing where to run it. Running it on the same Docker host as the monitored apps is convenient for low-consequence homelabs.
