SpeedTest by OpenSpeedTest is a self-hosted HTML5 speed-test server for measuring network throughput from devices on your local network. It gives homelab users a controlled, browser-based way to test download and upload speed against their own infrastructure instead of relying on public speed-test services.

First-install notes

  • Fill in the QNAP compose settings Before starting, replace the example DB_PASSWORD (the database password) and APP_KEY (a secret key the app needs) with your own, and point the /config and SSL volume paths to real folders on your QNAP. Without those, the app may not start, settings may not save, or your results can be lost. source
  • Open the web ports you need The QNAP example maps 8080 for the normal web interface and 8443 for HTTPS if you add custom SSL keys. If the port is not open or mapped, your browser can't reach the dashboard or speedtest data. source
  • Set PUID/PGID and keep config safe Set PUID/PGID (the user and group IDs the container runs as) if you want the app's files owned by your QNAP user, and back up the /config folder. Wrong ownership can make files hard to edit, and losing /config can wipe the app's settings. source
  • Access the speed-test web UI After the app is running, open port 3000 for HTTP or port 3001 for HTTPS in a browser from another device on your network. source

Common questions

In Cloudron, where do the extracted OpenSpeedTest files go?

After extracting OpenSpeedTest, files such as index.html need to sit directly inside the public directory.

Why do self-hosted OpenSpeedTest results differ from one test to another?

Speeds can vary throughout the day because of network congestion, WiFi interference, device limitations, or browser differences. Running multiple tests at different times helps compare performance.

Can self-hosted OpenSpeedTest help separate Wi-Fi problems from internet problems?

Yes, a self-hosted OpenSpeedTest server can be used to test Wi-Fi speed without internet usage affecting the result. If the local test is good but internet feels slow, the internet side is likely the issue.

Can OpenSpeedTest be installed with Docker?

A guide describes setting up OpenSpeedTest in Docker to run a self-hosted network speed test server. It is aimed at home labs, VPS, and network troubleshooting.
