HandBrake is a tool for converting video from nearly any format to a selection of modern, widely supported codecs. The graphical user interface (GUI) of the application can be accessed through a modern web browser, requiring no installation or configuration on the client side, or via any VNC client. The container is built against Alpine Linux to provide an efficient image in terms of size and resource usage. A fully automated mode is also available: drop files into a watch folder and let HandBrake process them without any user interaction.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Check the installer's SHA256 checksum Compare the SHA256 checksum (a file's unique fingerprint) on HandBrake's download page with the one from your downloaded file; if they do not match, the installer may be corrupted or unsafe, so do not run it. source
  • Use certUtil on Windows Open Command Prompt, type cd Downloads, then run the built-in Windows command certUtil -hashfile <installer-file> SHA256 to show that file's fingerprint. This lets you compare it with HandBrake's official value before installing. source
  • Use shasum on macOS/Linux Open Terminal, type cd ~/Downloads, then run shasum -a 256 HandBrake-* to list fingerprints for the downloaded HandBrake files. That helps you catch a bad download before you install it. source
  • Open the HandBrake web interface After deploying the container, open HandBrake's full graphical interface directly in any modern web browser — no client-side download, install, or setup is required. You can also connect with any VNC client; the web interface includes an integrated file manager and terminal. source
  • Web and VNC Access Open HandBrake's full graphical interface in a modern web browser or any VNC client; no client-side installation is required. source
  • Automated watch folder Drop video files into the configured watch folder to have HandBrake process them automatically. source
