Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes
- Use the device address, port, and key In the part of your app that talks to ESPHome, set the device's IP or .local name, port 6053, and its noise_psk (the encryption key). Without the correct address and key, the app cannot securely log in to the device. source
- Start ReconnectLogic for auto-reconnect Create ReconnectLogic around the API client and call start(), and set deep_sleep if the device sleeps. Without this, the app stays disconnected after a network drop or device reboot. source
- Handle first connect failures Wrap the first connect(login=True) in a try/except for APIConnectionError, and check api.is_connected in the error branch. This tells you the device is missing or the key is wrong instead of leaving the app hanging. source

Common questions
Why does my Dockerized ESPHome dashboard lose track of my devices?
ESPHome relies on mDNS to discover devices and resolve their .local names. Running Docker without host networking can stop multicast from reaching it. Use Docker's host networking mode.
Can ESPHome devices work without a Home Assistant instance?
Yes, ESPHome can run without connecting to any Home Assistant instance, although many examples show it running under Home Assistant.
What connection details does an external app need to talk to an ESPHome device?
Use the device's IP or .local name, port 6053, and the noise_psk encryption key. Without the correct address and key, the app cannot securely log in to the device.
How should an app recover after an ESPHome device reboots or drops off the network?
Wrap the API client in ReconnectLogic and call start(). Set deep_sleep if the device sleeps, otherwise the app can stay disconnected after a network drop or reboot.
Why does flashing over USB fail even when the chip is powered?
A common cause is a charging-only USB cable that cannot establish a data connection. Use a USB data cable for installation.
