The MongoDB C++ Driver is the official client library that lets C++ applications connect to and interact with MongoDB databases. It provides the APIs for storing, retrieving, and managing data that developers writing custom C++ programs need to talk to MongoDB natively.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Install FastAPI sample dependencies In the mongodb-pymongo-fastapi folder, open a virtual environment (a separate Python workspace) and run pip install -r requirements.txt. If you skip this, the app will not start because Python cannot find the packages it needs. source
  • Install Flask sample dependencies If you are using the Flask (a Python web framework) example, run pip install flask-pymongo Flask-Mail celery before starting it. Without these packages, the app will fail when Python tries to load it. source
  • Add PyMongoExplain for query plans Run python3 -m pip install pymongoexplain only if you want to explain how MongoDB runs aggregation queries. Without it, that explain feature in the examples will not work. source
  • Installation New users should clone or download the driver from the releases/stable branch, which tracks the version MongoDB recommends for production use. source

Common questions

What CMake issues have been reported when building mongo-cxx-driver 4.5.0 with VS2022 on Windows?

CMake errors can occur even if the C driver download succeeds. The thread notes that building the C++ driver from a self-built C driver is not clearly explained.

How can I install the modern MongoDB C++ driver on Fedora?

Install the mongo-cxx-driver-devel package. The Fedora discussion says this provides the modern C++ MongoDB driver and replaces the legacy driver.

What should I check before upgrading to a newer version of the C++ driver?

Check the Upgrade Driver Versions documentation. It explains what changes you might need to make to your application when upgrading driver versions.
