First-install notes

  • Install the prompt-api polyfill first Use npm (the package tool for JavaScript apps) and run npm install prompt-api-polyfill before starting the app. This adds the missing browser support code, so prompt features don’t fail on browsers that don’t have Chrome’s built-in API. source
  • Load your backend settings file Make sure a .env.json settings file exists in the project and is loaded as window.FIREBASE_CONFIG before the app starts. Without it, the app doesn’t know which AI backend to use, so AI features may fail or stop working. source
  • Install Firebase if you use it If your setup uses Firebase AI Logic, use npm to install the firebase package. Missing this JavaScript library means the app cannot talk to Firebase-based AI services. source
  • Installation Install the CLI from PyPI with pip install chrome-agent (https://pypi.org/project/chrome-agent/). source

Common questions

Will loading the agent with the --load-extension flag continue to work on official Chrome builds?

No. Starting in Chrome 137, official Chrome branded builds remove the ability to load extensions through the --load-extension command-line flag.

What must be installed before starting the app if the browser lacks Chrome's built-in prompt API?

Run npm install prompt-api-polyfill first. This adds the missing browser support code so prompt features do not fail.

What project file must be loaded before the app starts so it can select an AI backend?

A .env.json settings file must exist in the project and be loaded as window.FIREBASE_CONFIG. Without it, the app does not know which AI backend to use.

Do I need an extra npm package for Firebase AI Logic?

Yes, install the firebase package with npm. Without the package, the app cannot talk to Firebase-based AI services.

Is giving the agent access to an active Chrome session a trust concern?

Handing an autonomous agent active Chrome session cookies and stored payment methods is a trust risk.
