First-install notes

  • Web dashboard uses port 8080 Before opening the dashboard, make sure you can reach the machine's default Scrutiny web port, 8080, and that it is started with the config at /opt/scrutiny/config/scrutiny.yaml. If the port or config is wrong, the web UI may not load or may not connect to your collector settings. source
  • Collector needs smartmontools Install smartmontools on the computer that has the drives, because it provides the smartctl command Scrutiny's collector uses. Without this, the web app can run but will have no drive health data to display. source
  • Start the collector timer After configuring the collector, enable and start scrutiny-collector.timer so it reads drive health on a schedule. If the timer isn't enabled, data collection stops and the dashboard may stay blank. source

Common questions

What default port and config path must match for the Scrutiny web dashboard?

The web dashboard uses port 8080 and should be started with the config at /opt/scrutiny/config/scrutiny.yaml. If the port or config is wrong, the web UI may not load or may not connect to your collector settings.

What software must the machine with the hard drives have for Scrutiny to collect S.M.A.R.T. data?

Install smartmontools on the computer that has the drives, because it provides the smartctl command Scrutiny's collector uses. Without it, the web app can run but will have no drive health data.

What Scrutiny timer must be enabled and started so the collector reads drive health on a schedule?

Enable and start scrutiny-collector.timer after configuring the collector. If the timer isn't enabled, data collection stops and the dashboard may stay blank.
