First-install notes
- Let the scan see all files When scanning a mounted drive or another user's folders, run QDirStat with admin rights, for example: sudo qdirstat /path/to/folder. Without that, it may skip hidden files or folders it is not allowed to read, so the size totals can be wrong. source
- Don't hand-edit cache files If QDirStat saves a cache file for faster re-scans, keep it but do not edit it by hand. Manual changes can confuse the file format and make the tool show wrong folder sizes or stale results. source
- Use slow-update for big folders For very large folders or remote shares, start the scan with the slow-update option, for example: qdirstat --slow-update /path/to/folder. This gives it a longer pause between updates, which is friendlier when the scan source is slow and can make the program feel stuck at the default pace. source

Common questions
Can the GUI be used on a separate machine while the data is collected on a server?
Yes. It can be used on a different machine, such as a desktop, with data collected by a Perl script on the server.
Why might it report a different disk usage total than a file manager?
On btrfs, it may not be able to read certain folders, such as @root, so its total can differ from what the file manager reports.
How does it handle deleting entire directories?
It does not copy entire directory trees to the trash. It tries to copy single files, and for larger items it follows the XDG trash specification.
Does it provide both a tree view and a treemap?
Yes. It shows directory and file sizes in a traditional tree view and in a colored treemap, with larger files displayed as larger rectangles.
