LocalStack is a local cloud emulator that lets you build and test cloud applications entirely on your machine. Spin up fully functional local environments that mirror real cloud behavior — including AWS services and Snowflake — without provisioning real cloud infrastructure. Whether you're validating IaC templates, running integration tests, or iterating on data pipelines, LocalStack integrates seamlessly with your tools and CI/CD pipelines to help you ship faster and safer.

Health score?A 0-100 score computed nightly from four factors: maintained (40%: recent commits and steady activity), popular (25%: GitHub stars, log scale), easy to install (20%: platforms, install notes, setup guides, Docker image) and light to run (15%: minimum RAM, ARM support). When the source code has been checked, a fifth factor, security check (20%: automated scan for committed secrets, unsafe desktop-app settings, known-vulnerable dependencies and project hygiene; any serious finding caps it at 20), is added. Factors without data are left out and the rest are rescaled.

First-install notes

  • Install the LocalStack CLI first Run either `python3 -m pip install localstack` or `brew install localstack/tap/localstack-cli` depending on your system. This gives you the `localstack` command, so you can start and manage the Docker app from your terminal. source
  • Start LocalStack in Docker After installing the CLI, run `localstack start -d` to launch LocalStack in the background. This starts the Docker runtime you’ll point your apps to; if it’s not running, your Local AWS calls will not work. source
  • Set up an AWS CLI test profile If you’ll use AWS CLI tools, add a profile in `~/.aws/credentials` and `~/.aws/config` with test keys, a secret, and a region like `eu-central-1`. Without that profile, commands such as `aws sts get-caller-identity --profile ls-sandbox` can’t find the credentials and will fail. source

Common questions

How do I start LocalStack for local AWS calls?

Install the LocalStack CLI with pip or Homebrew, then run localstack start -d to launch the Docker runtime in the background. If the Docker app is not running, local AWS calls will not work.

Why do AWS CLI commands against LocalStack fail with missing credentials?

Add a test profile to ~/.aws/credentials and ~/.aws/config with test keys, a secret, and a region. Without that profile, commands such as sts get-caller-identity fail.

Did LocalStack 3.0 change which AWS services are available in the free edition?

Yes. Version 3.0 moved SQS, SNS, DynamoDB, and S3 from the free Community Edition to the paid Pro tier.

Which Docker image does LocalStack use, and does it need an auth token?

The AWS emulator uses localstack/localstack-pro, while the Snowflake and Azure emulators use localstack/snowflake and localstack/localstack-azure. All require a valid auth token.
